The second round of the training programme ‘Stepping Up’ is now open for applications from experienced craft, technical, production and post-production crew members to take the next step and move up in their career. The aim of the scheme is to nurture Scotland’s existing creative talent, increase their employability and help them to ‘step-up’ to more senior roles through a combination of paid work placements, bespoke short courses and mentoring. Applications are particularly welcome from people looking to progress to become production managers, first and second assistant directors, production co-ordinators, script supervisors or standby art directors. Alasdair Smith, Scotland Director, Creative Skillset, said: “The recent Employment Census demonstrated growth in the Scottish creative media workforce, which now employs 12,500 people, up from 7,300 in 2009. To ensure the industry continues to flourish it is vital we support film and TV crew through innovative schemes such as Stepping Up, which is already seeing great results from the first intake of applicants earlier this year. “The need for structured opportunities for employees to make the next step was identified by local employers as a key skills challenge for Scotland. Stepping Up helps to give them a structured way to gain the rounded experience needed.” The current round closes for applications at 9am on Wednesday 28 August. Further information can be found at www.creativeskillset.org/ The scheme is funded by a partnership of Creative Skillset, BBC Scotland, Creative Scotland, BECTU, Skills Development Scotland and the European Social Fund, via Scotland’s Trade Union Centre (STUC). Financial support has also been received from a number of Scottish-based independent production companies. Creative Skillset works closely with industry to identify and address skills needs and support production in Scotland and across the UK. Events also support the freelance community through free workshops, training and networking opportunities. |

This revival of a horror classic, one of the most famous of all silent films, follows Eureka! Entertainment's hugely successful restoration showcases of Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927) in 2010 and Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) in 2012.

Blu-ray, Blu-ray SteelBook and DVD releases of Nosferatu will follow with a raft of special features to be announced nearer the release date, as part of Eureka! Entertainment's award-winning The Masters of Cinema Series www.mastersofcinema.org .
Ron Benson, head of Eureka! Entertainment, comments: “Eureka! Entertainment have had the real pleasure of releasing some of the absolute classics of silent cinema, and there are arguably no more iconic than F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, the grandfather of all vampire films, which continues to thrill, chill, and horrify audiences nearly 100 years after it was made.”
Craig Keller, producer of The Masters of Cinema Series, adds: “This new restoration of Nosferatu has been meticulously prepared and looks truly outstanding. It will allow a new generation to experience afresh one of the greatest of all cinematographic horrors, and a monument of German expressionism, looking better than ever. The film is uncanny, legitimately terrifying – to see it on the big screen in the midst of the Halloween season will make for an unforgettable experience.”
Critical praise for Nosferatu:
"The first and probably the greatest of all vampire films." –Jonathan Rosenbaum
"[F. W. Murnau is] the greatest film director the Germans have ever known." – Lotte Eisner

The Film4 FrightFest returns with five days of fearsome films
The Empire Cinema Leicester Square, London, UK, once again hosts the Film4 FrightFest this August Bank Holiday weekend. The home of horror, the festival has been running at this location since 2005 and has rapidly grown in popularity. With five days of screenings (22nd -26th August 2013), audiences can expect to be scared witless with a devilishly delightful line-up of premieres, previews and special screenings of fantasy and horror films. For visitors travelling from outside of the capital, a great selection of central London hotels can be found on LondonTown.com.
This year's festival opens with the world premiere of The Ford Brothers' latest offering, The Dead 2: India. The first international zombie film shot in India, it follows on from the Ford Brothers' critically acclaimed zombie road movie, The Dead. Set against the scenery of Rajasthan, the film offers a far bigger canvas with plenty of thrilling action, death-defying stunts and, of course, lots of fright. This is one of ten world premieres to be screened in London for the festival, with others including Banshee Chapter, produced by Star Trek's Zachary Quinto; Christoph Behl's Argentinean apocalyptic, The Decent; Kit Ryan'sDementamania; and retro Spanish chiller For Elisa.
The UK premiere of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado's revenge thriller, Big Bad Wolves closes the festival. Described as 'part OLDBOY, part Hitchcock and part Coen Brothers', the film is a black comedy thriller that sees a series of brutal murders put the lives of three men on a collision course. Back in 2010 Keshales and Papushado's Rabies was the most requested film on the FrightFrest line-up so Big Bad Wolves is sure a see the festival conclude with a bang.
With many films expected to sell out, this year the festival organisers have introduced FrightFest Extra. Securing additional screening slots at Empire 2, many of the bigger films will be given repeat screenings, thus creating more opportunities to enjoy the films. Festival goers can choose between three ticket types: festival passes, day passes or individual tickets for single films.

PAPADOPOULOS & SONS
Success is the joy you feel! Award-winning British Independent comedy PAPADOPOULOS & SONS comes to DVD
After a hugely successful self-distributed run in UK cinemas, Writer/Director Marcus Markou's debut feature PAPADOPOULOS & SONS is available on DVD through HMV andAmazon.co.uk from Monday 5th of August.
A “fresh, funny and poignant snapshot of ethnic life in London” (Stella Papamichael, Radio Times), writer/director Marcus Markou’s debut feature PAPADOPOULOS & SONSdances its way onto DVD through HMV and Amazon.co.uk from Monday, 5th of August.
After uptight, self-made millionaire Harry Papadopoulos (Stephen Dilane – Game of Thrones, The Hours) loses everything in the banking crisis, he is forced to team up with his estranged, free spirited brother Spiros (Georges Corraface) to rebuild his empire from the only part that remains – an abandoned Fish & Chip shop in a run-down part of London.
Also starring Georgia Groome (Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Ed Stoppard (Upstairs, Downstairs),PAPADOPOULOS & SONS comes to home video via distributor 101 Films, following a highly unusual – and hugely successful – self-distribution release across British cinemas.
British-born Greek Cypriot writer/director Markou decided to self-distribute the film in April, after traditional distributors rejected the film, claiming it could not find an audience. Markou disagreed, and decided to self-finance the release. It was a gamble, but it paid off – the film was a UK box office success and has since been sold to distributors in various territories around the world, including a highly successful run in Germany. PAPADOPOULOS & SONS will be released in the USA this October.
"This is a film about the spirit of family unity and survival," says Markou. "When I look back, its right that it got rejected and then went on to become a success. This is, after all, the story of Cyprus itself and of most Cypriots. We are plucky underdogs and we love to bounce back!"
Winner of the Michael Cacoyannis Audience Award from the 2012 Thessaloniki Film Festival, PAPADOPOULOS & SONS is “an ambitious attempt to rewrite Lear for laughter rather than tears. It's a throwback, but relaxed, sweet and funny with it: a first feature that makes an impression by not pushing too hard to make an impression” (MikeMcCahill, The Guardian)
PAPADOPOULOS & SONS is available on DVD through HMV and Amazon.co.uk from Monday, 5th of August 2013.

International Images for Science Exhibition 2013
An exhibition of the world's best scientific photography
The Royal Photographic Society, in partnership with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), launches an exhibition of the world’s best scientific photography at the Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle, on Saturday 31 August. The exhibition also forms part of the British Science Festival taking place in Newcastle from 7-12 September, before touring the UK from 1 October.
Submissions were open internationally with the images chosen by an expert panel of scientific photographers and scientists. The selected images were produced by scientists for their research, recording science in action and highlighting the importance of photography within modern-day science. The visually stunning images range from far-away galaxies to subatomic particles, using specialist imaging techniques such as ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR), time lapse and high speed, electron microscopy, thermography, macro and photomicrography, phase contrast microscopy and schlieren photography.
Commenting on the exhibition, Afzal Ansary, the exhibition coordinator, said: “The exhibition is a stunning, colourful, visual feast. What is particularly exciting is that the images highlight the crucial role that photography continues to play in modern science, illustrating the work of scientists and as an essential research tool. This year’s exhibition is outstanding in the breadth of subjects and the quality of work shown”.
Photography has been used in science since it was announced in 1839 and it continues to play a key role across many diverse areas. In astronomy it is used to study the composition of the nebulae and to give us a better understanding of outer space, stars and galaxies, in oceanography it helps to study seafloor geological formations as well as recording the migration and behaviour of marine life, and in medicine it acts as a diagnostic tool. The one hundred selected images are not only outstanding records of their subject but they also provide a wealth of scientific information.
A fully illustrated catalogue with explanatory texts is available from the exhibition venue, priced £10, or online from The Royal Photographic Society at:www.rps.org/IISE2013cat
The exhibition runs from Saturday 31 August until Sunday 30 Septmber at the Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle. Admission is free. It will then tour the United Kingdom and Europe. Further information and a current list of venues can be found at: www.rps.org/IISE2013

Snap-Happy Brits Take Over 600 Million Photos a Week
· The UK is a nation of snappers taking over 600 million photos every week
· 52% of Britons take photos on their phones and store an average of 180 pictures on their devices
· Around 1 in 5 snappers have lost photos due to a broken device, 5% due to a stolen device and around 3 in 10 Brits do not back up their digital photos
· People (51%), landscapes (19%) and animals/ pets (11%) are our favourite subjects
LONDON, 6th AUGUST, 2013 - Thanks to smartphone, tablet and digital camera technology, image hungry Britain now takes an average of over 600 million photos in the week. According to an online study commissioned by SmugMug* the world’s largest independent photo sharing website, which launches to the UK public this week, most of our snaps feature our friends and family, followed by our beautiful countryside with our pets coming in third.
With the advancements in technology, our photography habits have changed irrevocably resulting in a photographic Tsunami. The online SmugMug survey found that Brits take a mean average of 19 photographs in an ordinary week (not taking in account holidays or special occasions). With 47.75 million* adult residents in the UK, that’s a lot of photos – SmugMug estimates over 600 million in fact**.
Over half of Brits online (52%) take photos primarily on their phones and 32% keep them there. Of those that do an average of 180 photos are currently stored on their mobiles.
Yet when asked how many of us had lost images due to a broken (21%), stolen device (5%) or human error (30%), 56% replied yes they had. Furthermore almost 3 in 10 (28%) Brits admit that they do not back up their photos, with women (32%) being the worst culprits at not ensuring their photographic memories are safe for the future.
Don Macaskill, CEO of SmugMug, commented that “Our photos and precious memories have never been so at risk because of technology but thanks to technology we can keep them safe for the future. We've built a product that's not only the most stunning service you've ever seen, but offers unlimited security and personalisation like the web has never seen. SmugMug begins with stunning and ends with personal”.
SmugMug commissioned the survey to discover more about the photo-storing and sharing habits of Britain ahead of launching its first fully formed consumer offering in the UK this week. SmugMug will launch its cloud based photo service, already a major hit in the US to UK customers, offering a safe and secure home for the best and most important of our images. With high level security settings, our 600million photos are safe from theft or copying, yet through links and passwords, our images can be shared with friends, family and loved ones. Best of all, images are presented in beautiful website templates and in the highest resolution, and are accessible instantly and on any device. SmugMug has been used for over ten years by the world’s leading photographers and is now available to consumers in the UK.
*Conducted by YouGov for SmugMug
** SmugMug have used an adult population figure of 47,754,569 as a base, and then taken 70% of that (as 30% of the original sample does not take photos during an average week). This gives us 33,428,198 and this is then multiplied by 19 (the mean amount of photographs taken).

RADIO ALAN:
THE ALAN PARTRIDGE PLAYER
AVAILABLE TO BUY ON iTUNES NOW
#RadioAlanApp
From his early appearances on Radio 4’s On The Hour, through the graveyard shifts on Norfolk Nights to his most recent slot as the host of Mid Morning Matters, Alan Partridge has always been a radio man.
Now it is (virtually) possible to create his radio show for yourself thanks to the launch of the official Alan Partridge app, Radio Alan: The Alan Partridge Player. The app is now available to buy on iTunes for £0.99 to coincide with the debut of Alan’s first feature film Alpha Papa in cinemas nationwide on 7th August 2013.
The app is designed to play audio clips of Alan talking ‘live’ on-air from “Mid-Morning Matters” interspersed with songs from YOUR iTunes library, creating the impression that you’re actually listening to Alan’s radio show live on North Norfolk Digital. So as you listen to music on your iPhone, you can also ponder Alan’s talking points: “You’re stuck on a desert island and only allowed one condiment, what is it to be?”
As Partridge’s loyal fans know, Alan’s radio segues often end with him introducing a song in his own inimitable style (e.g. “Keep your clubs away from his young, it’s Seal!”) The app will recognise if you have a Seal track in your iTunes library and play that song next.
The app also has a ‘Rate My Tunes’ option, whereby Alan rates your iTunes library. If he likes your taste in music you may get a “Back of the Net!” rating that you can share with your friends on Facebook.
To enhance the app experience even further additional in-app purchases include; A ‘Partridge Playlist’ featuring some of Alan’s favourite artists and additional audio clips are available to buy for £0.99.
Radio Alan: The Alan Partridge Player was conceived by Brighton-based app development studio Touch Fantastic and developed in collaboration with Baby Cow Productions and BBC Worldwide.
