Doctor Who Style Prediction

What Will Peter Capaldi Wear?
With Whovians the world over eagerly awaiting the 50th anniversary special on November 23rd, thoughts are turning to how Doctor Who will change post-regeneration. Peter Capaldi will step into the role after Matt Smith’s final episode this Christmas and there is growing speculation about what his character will be like. Whilst we now know that he will keep his native Glaswegian accent for the role, the all-important costume is yet to be revealed. As Steven Moffat recently stated in an interview that ‘it’s really important that the actor chooses what makes him feel like the Doctor’, we’ve taken a look at Capaldi’s past fashion choices to predict what The Doctor’s next trend-setting outfit will be like.

Smart with a Hint of Eccentricity
Almost all past Doctors have added a touch of the unconventional to their outfits, letting their otherworldly side come out through a stick of celery, ridiculously long scarf or rather odd hat. We’re not certain that Capaldi’s ensemble will be quite as trailblazing as Matt Smith’s bow tie or David Tennant’s Converse trainers, but we see no reason why he shouldn’t add a touch of the unusual to his costume.

After his roles in The Thick of It and Torchwood - yes, the Doctor Who franchise does like to recycle actors - Capaldi is quite used to dressing smartly. He might opt for a simple shirt and trousers combination, with a waistcoat over the top and a cravat for a bit of sophistication. Perhaps he’ll bring back the pocket watch from the days of the Seventh and Eighth Doctors, which was briefly revisited by the Tenth Doctor when he locked up his Time Lord identity to avoid being tracked by the Family of Blood. The Twelfth Doctor’s smart and slightly eccentric outfit could be completed with a well-trimmed beard to highlight his more mature look.

Accidental Hipster
Whilst we’re sure that any costume of The Doctor’s would be chosen for reasons of personal taste and never to follow ridiculous human trends, there is a chance that he might stumble out of his extensive wardrobe looking more than a little hipster. It’s easy these days to mistake a pretentious brogue or fake pair of glasses for a merely practical item, so we’d forgive Capaldi if he ended up looking like the long-lost member of Mumford and Sons.

A small role in World War Z, in which he somewhat eerily played a W.H.O Doctor, has already shown us that Capaldi isn’t adverse to a bit of knitwear. He may well continue his foray into the exciting world of wool with a cardigan, probably maroon, which would be set off beautifully by a checked shirt. If he’s feeling particularly dapper, he could finish off the look with some turned-up chinos, brogues without socks and an expensive vintage wristwatch that he swears he got from a flea market. Oh, and the moustache, of course, groomed into submission with wax and put on Instagram for the whole of time and space to see.

Time Warp
With all that zipping about through history, The Doctor is bound to pick up a few fashion tips from other eras. Whilst we don’t think he’s ready for full-on Sontaran battle armour, there’s a decent chance that he has a few favourite human fashions that he’d like to try out. This approach was taken by the First and Eighth Doctors, but perhaps Capaldi might make things a bit more interesting by trying our several time periods all at once.

Having already done justice to a top hat in 2011 historical drama The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, Capaldi could opt for a hint of Victorian style once again. A top hat and cane would fit nicely with a crisp white shirt, maybe teamed with skinny jeans for a hint of 1970s punk. A velvet smoking jacket might add a touch of luxury to this ensemble and demonstrate the influence of his previous incarnations, whilst a clean shave and leather shoes would add a 21st century feel. Capaldi mustn’t forget his alien roots, though, so a sonic watch would be perfect to finish off the Time Lord’s time warp costume.

KATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA

PETER OTOOLE JOINS STAR STUDDED CAST IN BRITISH INDEPENDENT FILM

All-star British cast includes Joss Ackland, Steven Berkoff, and Edward Fox
Saint Katherinestory to be told for the first time on screen
One of the biggest British independent films for decades
The cream of British cinema talent behind the camera

November 25, 2013: Multi-award winning actor Peter OToole joins a star-studded cast in one of the biggest British Independent productions for decades. The film tells the remarkable story of Katherine of Alexandria and her link to Constantine the Great. Katherine, the patron saint of scholars, was officially removed from the Catholic calendar in 1969 only to be reinstated in 2002 by Pope John Paul II.

Peter OToole, nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards, given an honorary Oscar, and winner of four Golden Globes, produces a fine performance as palace orator Gallus, alongside Romanian newcomer Nicole Keniheart who plays the persecuted Katherine.

Screen-writer and director Michael Redwood states: My agenda was simple: painstaking research, to create an intelligent screenplay and to seek out Britains best performers for their unrivalled ability to help portray the story of this religious icon. The dialogue demanded some of the worlds most recognisable voices such as Peter OToole and Edward Fox, who were an inspiration to work with. Katherines voice also had to be most haunting in its delivery

The film stars Joss Ackland, C.B.E, (White Mischief, Lethal Weapon 2) playing Rufus, Steven Berkoff (Octopussy, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Liberius, Edward Fox, O.B.E, (The Day of the Jackal, Edward VIII) playing Emperor Constantius and Samantha Beckinsale (London’s Burning, Shelley), half-sister of Kate Beckinsale, as the Empress Vita. Katherine of Alexandria was directed by British filmmaker Michael Redwood and filmed at Paphos in Cyprus, and Hadrian’s Wall, Pinewood Studios and Elstree Studios in the UK. The movie is set for release early 2014.

Behind the camera, debut director Redwood surrounded himself with award winning talent. Oscar winner John Poyner is Sound Supervisor, Golden Globe winner Matt Howe is Surround Sound Mixer, Oscar winner John Schoonraad is Prosthetics Supervisor and award winning cinematographer Peter Taylor is on camera.

Over 2 billion Christians around the world are expected to celebrate St Katherines Day on 25th November, and there are approximately 1,100 buildings in her honour around the globe. Millions of people each year pay homage to the Saint at her monastery on Mount Sinai, Egypt, her final resting place. Despite this, so little is known about the intrigue surrounding this iconic woman.

It is commonly believed that Katherine was a Christian maiden of Alexandria in Egypt, possessing beauty, brains and noble birth. Redwoods film portrays Katherine as a real woman, with feelings of torment and fear but a steadfast belief in her denouncement of Romes enforced pagan worship upon the masses. This would eventually lead to her being pitted against Romes finest scholars at an open trial in Alexandria, one of the films most dramatic scenes.

DESERT RUNNERS

DESERT RUNNERS plays in the ‘Best of Fests’ at IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) this week and is eligible for the Audience Award www.desertrunnersmovie.com

Desert Runners is directed, produced and edited by Jennifer Steinman and tells the story of an eclectic group of non-professional athletes who take it upon themselves to take on the Desert Grand Slam of runs resulting in Five Marathons in Six Days across the four harshest deserts in the world - Atacama, Sahara, Gobi and Antarctica.  All whilst running and carrying everything you need to survive (food, first aid, supplies, water) in a rucksack on your back.

The documentary follows the runners, Dave O'Brien a 56 year old Irish businessman, who as he has got older has become an ultra-marathon nut in an attempt to combat ageing.  Ricky, an ex-baseball player from America. Samantha, a law student from Melbourne, Australia who dreams of being the first female to complete the challenge and the youngest person at the same time.  In her words, she has time for structure before her dreams get undone by the stringent nature of societal rules of marriage and security.

Steinman not only offers incredible insight into the psychological nature of these competitors who go to extreme ends of the earth to fulfill their ability but shows how their sheer belief has guided them to the end result.

This close proximity with the competitors showing the harshness and the grit that they put themselves through is in sharp juxtaposition with the sheer awe and beauty of the natural landscapes the runners have as a backdrop.  Allowing Steinman to also offer a picture postcard of Mother Nature as well as a tough cookie to overcome when running through her.

At times as gruelling as it is inspiring offering an amazing insight into the mind of runners in general coupled with some wonderful landscape cinematography.  Desert Runners is one of the most exhilarating documentaries of recent years.

Desert Runners as well as being up for Best Documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam; was named as one of the Best of the Fest at the 2013 Edinburgh Film Festival and won Audience Awards at the 2013 Hamptons International Film Festival and 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival.
