BITTER SEEDS + Q&A(TBC)
Screening Thursday 28th June | 8pm | Rich Mix

Indian cotton farmers duped by the promise of new GM seeds
find themselves in a desperate spiral of debt and often suicide in this compelling and tender film.

Every 30 minutes an Indian farmer kills himself as a consequence of overwhelming debt. In India many farmers switched to genetically modified seeds produced by the American company Monsanto, and the drawbacks proved to be manifold. In contrast to the supposed benefits, the costs for fertilizer and pesticides turned out to be far higher than before. What's more, the seeds require more water, and the farmers are rain-dependent in an arid area but the low cost of the GM seeds priced traditional methods out of the market and the farmers find themselves trapped in a spiral of debt. The film follows a young female journalist trying to uncover India’s tragic suicide statistics.

‘The documentary is among the most subtle and artful condemnations of the food industry…. wrapped within a gripping character-based narrative.’ Filmmaker Magazine

DocHouse and Open City Docs Fest present…
5 BROKEN CAMERAS London Premiere
+ Q&A with both directors, Emad Burnat coming especially from the West Bank

Screening Thursday 21st June | 7.30pm | Riverside Studios | £7/5 concs

Palestinian farm laborer Emad has five video cameras - each tells a different part of the story of resistance

Using the first camera Emad recorded how the bulldozers came to rip the olive trees out of the ground in 2005 but was prevented from filming further as his camera was broken in the protest. Yet, Emad keeps on filming with new cameras despite pleas from his wife, who fears reprisals. It makes for an intensely powerful personal document about one village's struggle against violence and oppression. ‘We made this film with sincere initiative, trying to avoid all the clichés’ and traps as much as we could, and to challenge our own prejudgments’.

‘Eloquence, spare cinematic metaphor and intimate personal vision create a visceral, first-person story of non-violent resistance in Bil’in’ (Hotdocs)

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with directors Guy David and Emad Burnat who is visiting from the West Bank for this London Premiere.

DESERT RIDERS + Q&A
with Anti-Slavery International
Screening Thursday 14th June | Tricycle Cinema | £7/5 concs

Camel racing is big business in the UAE, but the jockeys are children
brutally mistreated, removed from their families and forced into races where accidents can be lethal.
Desert Riders gives us a shocking look behind the scenes of camel racing in the wealthy United Arab Emirates – a sport that grew from local to international prominence in the 1980s. Suspicious accidents, undernourishment, sleep deprivation, rape, growth-retarding injections; the stories of young veteran jockeys Rafiq, Nasir, Ronnie, Amirul, Lokmon, Mobarak and Hasan are truly appalling. SEE THE TRAILER
‘Vic Sarin’s hot-button expose documentary Desert Riders peels back the curtain on thousands of boys trafficked to the Middle East’ (Playback)
DocHouse will be joined by Catherine Turner from Anti-Slavery International for a panel discussion on campaigning for the end of child labour. Catherine is the Child Labour Programme Coordinator at Anti-Slavery International, researching and advocating on child slavery issues there since 2002. SYNOPSIS:

Directed by Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot), this gut-wrenching adaptation of Charles Jackson's The Lost Weekend horrified its studio, was rejected by test audiences, and was lobbied by temperance groups, yet went on to huge success and became the awards sensation of its year.

Ray Milland stars as Don Birnam, a New York author struggling with years of alcoholism and writer's block. Trying to keep him on the path to rehabilitation are his straight-laced brother Wick (Philip Terry) and devoted long-time girlfriend Helen (Jane Wyman). When Don absconds from a country excursion, he embarks on a four-day binge, spiralling towards rock bottom.

Winner of the Grand Prix at the first ever Cannes Film Festival, as well as Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Screenplay, this brutal noir provided one of cinema's first in-depth studies of addiction. Crackling with rapier dialogue, vivid performances, and Wilder's superlative direction, The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present The Lost Weekend for the first time anywhere in the world on Blu-ray. Released in the UK in a standard edition & limited edition SteelBook on 25 June 2012.

SYNOPSIS:

"That's a honey of an anklet you're wearing, Mrs. Dietrichson."

Double Indemnity is the dazzling, quintessential film noir whose enormous popular success and seven Oscar nominations catapulted Billy Wilder (Some Like It HotSunset BoulevardThe Apartment) into the very top tier of Hollywood's writer-directors. Adapted from a novella by James M. Cain (The Postman Always Rings Twice), co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler (The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye), Double Indemnity remains the hardest-boiled of delectations.

Insurance hawker Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) gets seduced by some other man's wife: a bored, sex-starved Barbara Stanwyck done up in lorry-grille wig and a pair of lips like wine grapes smashed in candle-wax. She wants to off her better half and collect on his policy, but spitfire claims-adjuster Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) smells a rat – or at least the cheap perfume all over that Dietrichson file.

Neff himself ties up the twisting plot in a neat bow: "We were talking about automobile insurance, only you were thinking about murder. And I was thinking about that anklet."

Nominated for seven Oscars at the 1945 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Billy Wilder), Best Actress (Barbara Stanwyck), Best Screenplay (Wilder and Raymond Chandler), Best Cinematography (John F. Seitz), Best Score (Miklós Rózsa), Best Sound Recording (Loren Ryder). The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity for the first time anywhere in the world on Blu-ray, in a standard edition and a limited edition steelbook on 25 June 2012.

NEW HORIZONS FOR UK FILM

INCREASED INVESTMENT FOR 3 STRATEGIC PRIORITIES: EDUCATION & AUDIENCES, FILMMAKING, FILM HERITAGE

8.5 million children to have film education
1000 community centres to be equipped to show films digitally
Production and development funds for British films set to increase by 30% over next 5 years
10,000 British films digitised
A four week consultation opens today around the BFI’s proposals outlined in its five-year Future Plan for Film 2012-17 New Horizons for UK Film. With Lottery funding for film increasing, the draft plan outlines how the BFI proposes to invest an expected total of £273m with an average yearly Lottery investment of £57m a year in film for the next five years. This equates to an average annual investment of £17m for Education and Audiences; £28.2m for supporting British film; £3m for Film Heritage and £1m for Research and Statistics, a £3m contingency and an 8% cost of delivery. The BFI has sets its sights on a new horizon for UK film with bold new proposals that will help the film industry outride the recession and give audiences across the country a better deal and more choice. Underpinning the BFI’s vision is a renewed commitment to the future – future generations of audiences, future generations of filmmaking, new ideas and future opportunities the digital revolution can bring.  A year on from becoming the UK’s lead organisation for film, and in response to Lord Smith’s independent Review of Film Policy in January, the BFI has indentified its future strategic priorities:
Education and Audiences - includes:
  • Ensuring every child in the UK aged 5-19 (a potential 8.5million in 23,000 schools) has film and filmmaking as part of their education.
  • A UK-wide film academy to spot and nurture the talent of the future giving 16-19-year-olds, regardless of their background or where they live, a unique experience to work with and learn from film professionals.
  • A UK wide network of virtual and physical film hubs, probably based at independent cinemas, with links to schools, film societies, film archives, rural and community cinemas.
  • Digital equipment installed in up to 1,000 community centres, village halls and other non-theatrical locations across the UK.
Supporting the future success of British film – includes:
  • Production and development funds for British films set to increase by 30% over 5 years.
  • Launching new talent development centres across the UK for writers, directors and producers in association with our partners
  • Helping the UK retain its competitive edge in the industry by equipping up to 5,000 a year of the UK’s work force with new skills via a new film training scheme that includes next generation skills such as special effects and digital production.
Film heritage – includes:
  • Working in partnership to unlock the UK’s film heritage for everyone to enjoy by digitising 10,000 British film titles that will transform our understanding of British cinema.
Greg Dyke, Chairman BFI said ‘We have set out a bold, long term vision for film that will genuinely make a difference to education, audiences and filmmakers and support the UK’s growth agenda by boosting jobs and the economy and stimulating inward investment and export. I would like to thank Lord Smith for his thorough Film Policy Review which has spring-boarded the BFI’s own Future Plan for Film.’
Amanda Nevill, Chief BFI said: British creativity and talent is world class and our plan capitalises on that to help drive economic growth in the UK, support jobs and skills and incentivise new thinking and new ideas. But this plan is also about creating a new deal for audiences. This isn’t just about the next five years; long term the BFI wants people to have a lifelong relationship with film, both the next generation of audiences and filmmakers.’

The BFI will be hosting a series of public consultation events on the proposals set out in New Horizons for Film across the UK at the following locations:
Sheffield - Wednesday 23 May, 13:30-16:00 Showroom, Cinema 2, 15 Paternoster Row, S1 2BX
