MODERN KOREAN WOMEN

Presented by: Korean Film Archive and Leeds Film Quarter

"Leeds Film Quarter is delighted to be the first international partner to present KOFA's new Modern Korean Women retrospective,an intriguing selection of features exploring female roles in a Far Eastern society,"

The most exciting filmmaking nation of the moment, Korea has a phenomenal, mostly unchartered cinema history and the country's national film agency KOFA is working hard to restore and promote some of the several thousand films produced.Leeds Film Quarter is delighted to be the first international partner to present KOFA's new Modern Korean Women retrospective,an intriguing selection of features exploring female roles in a Far Eastern society from six decades. Not until the 1990s was there much positive change in Korean women's social status,or even change for the women appearing in film: witness their demeaned depiction in the early work that contrasts with the societal shakedown in the most recent film A Good Lawyer's Wife.

"Modern Korean Women" is brought to the region by Leeds Film Quarter. Run by Leeds Film, LFQ utilises venues across the city to explore the vast and challenging universe of cinema that lies beyond the known mainstream, often featuring the only UK screenings of selected films and frequently
presenting brand new prints.

In addition to the year-round Leeds Film Quarter and education programmes, it delivers the annual Leeds International Film Festival (10-20 November 2005) and Leeds Young People's Film Festival (Easter 2006)

The global movie industry is changing on a daily basis, both commercially and in terms of subject matter and the time has come for us take a focused look at the nature of these changes."

The IHT is gearing up to provide special daily coverage of the 58th Cannes International Film Festival (May 11-22). Prominent contributors will include award-winning film critic A.O.
