National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) is encouraging budding photographers to go down to the water and shoot some winning maritime images as it launches its 2012 Photography Competition. With a £1,000 overall prize up for grabs, to be spent by the winner on a registered historic vessel of their choice, NHS-UK is looking for entries that truly capture the spirit of the UK’s maritime heritage and with the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant just weeks away there couldn’t be a better time for the nation to get snapping.
With a range of categories for all ages, NHS-UK is also urging schools across the country to get involved in the search for the Young Photographer of the Year where winners will receive camera equipment for their school and a class visit to a historic vessel near them as well as having their winning photography published.
Entries will be judged by a team of experts who will be looking for imagination, creativity and unusual perspectives. This year’s judging panel includes Jock Wishart, one of the UK’s leading maritime and polar adventurers; author Philip Hoare; Yachting Journalists Association Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year, Geoff Holt; Peter Mumford, professional photographer from Beken of Cowes; David Newberry, ex-Captain of HMS Warrior 1860; and editor of Classic Boat magazine, Dan Houston.
Commenting on the launch of the 2012 Photography Competition, Martyn Heighton, Director of National Historic Ships UK, said “We are delighted to be launching our annual photography competition in a year that will see our maritime heritage on display to the world. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, which will bring together some thousand craft, will offer the perfect backdrop for all budding photographers looking for some maritime inspiration.
“In previous years we have been captivated by the entries from children and so this year we are also looking for the Young Photographer of the Year to encourage even more schools and young people to get involved and showcase their photography skills.”
Winning entries will follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner, Mike Garlick from Salisbury who wowed the judges with his photo ‘Maybird. Early morning Newton Creek’.
