Conference to pay tribute to “neglected comedy genius”

Event celebrating the life and career of comic actor Arthur Lucan to be held at the London Cinema Museum Saturday 12 October

A one-day conference celebrating the Life and Films of comic actor Arthur Lucan and the centenary of his marriage to Kitty McShane is to be held at the London Cinema Museum on Saturday, 12 October between 10:30am and 5:00pm.

The event is being organised by Dr Robert Kenny of the University of Leicester’s School of Modern Languages, who will be speaking in the morning of the event and presenting pages from his forthcoming full-length study, "The Man who was Old Mother Riley."

Dr Kenny will be joined by academic speakers Dr Anthony Slide, Professor Jeffrey Richards from Lancaster University and Professor Steven Fielding from the University of Nottingham.

Afternoon events will include a round table discussion and a presentation by playwright and broadcaster Patrick Prior of his new play for the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre Guildford, "The Vampire and Mrs Riley."

The British Film Institute (BFI) has agreed to allow an exceptional one-off showing of the master-tape of Old Mother Riley in Business (1940); the film is commercially unavailable and has not been seen for some forty years. Other screenings will include Margery Baker’s 1969 documentary, ‘Applause! Applause!’.

Dr Kenny said: “When I discovered that there was only one rather inadequate and inaccurate study of Arthur Lucan and his wife Kitty McShane I decided they deserved better, particularly when I realised that much of the accepted biography in fact bears little relation to the truth.

“Arthur Lucan is a neglected comic genius, a viewed first expressed by Rachael Low and Leslie Halliwell, two of Britain's most famous film historians.

“I have received enormous support from a number distinguished academics and critics, including Anthony Slide, the man the Los Angeles Times called a "one man publishing phenomenon."  A year ago Anthony and I agreed that I should organise this conference to mark the centenary of the Lucans' stormy marriage, and to showcase my forthcoming book.

“I am especially happy that some young recent graduates in film and TV studies will also be with us, passing knowledge of Lucan's comic skills to a new generation.”

As well as academics, many members of Arthur Lucan's family will be present. The event will be the first time that Arthur Lucan has attracted a gathering of academic speakers as well as loyal fans. The day should prove to be both instructive and highly entertaining.

Refreshments will be available at the Cinema Museum licensed cafe/bar.

Doors open at 09.30am for a 10.30am start. The event concludes at 5:00pm.

Tickets are £10/£7 concessions.

Advance tickets may be purchased from WeGotTickets at the following address: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/233755

Alternatively, tickets can be purchased directly from the London Cinema Museum by calling 020 7840 2200 during office hours.

Made in Prague: Czech-o-Slovak Film Festival 2013

8 – 25 November 2013: The 17th Made in Prague Film Festival explores the best of contemporary Czech and Slovak cinema, marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Czech and Slovak Republics. Altogether 12 Czech and Slovak features portray both societies then and now while raising important social and political issues. The festival also pays homage to its leading directors, representatives of the Czechoslovak New Wave Juraj Jakubisko and Jiri Menzel, who will come to discuss their films in person. Menzel´s Don Juans, fresh from its world premiere in Montreal is, together with the UK premiere of Agnieszka Holland´s excellent three-part film Burning Bush, amongst 7 UK premieres featured in the programme.

The opening of the festival belongs to the Slovak cinema. Director Juraj Jakubisko will introduce the screening of his 1969 surreal utopia of free love and the search for happiness and freedom Little Birds, Orphans and Fools. Stylistically Jakubisko´s most dazzling work, it was seen as an allegory and immediately banned. Contemporary Slovak cinema will be represented by this year’s Rotterdam IFF winner Mira Fornay’s My Dog Killer. Shot in an observational style on authentic locations with a cast of non-actors, this is the story of one day in the life of an eighteen-year-old boy whose encounter with his estranged mother and his Romany half-brother leads to tragedy. Screened with a winning short from LA Shorts Fest 2013 Little Secret, the double bill captures the inherent racial tension present in today´s society.

The Czech counterpart to Slovak cinema is represented by Jiri Menzel’s double bill. Menzel will present his 1969 Oscar-winning film Closely Observed Trains about a suicidal virgin railway employee who, oblivious to the war around him and with only one thing on his mind, still becomes an unexpected hero. This masterpiece of human observation is paired with the UK premiere of Menzel’s brand new film Don Juans, an inventive mix of comedy and drama set at a rehearsal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

The UK Premiere of Agnieszka Holland’s outstanding three-part docudrama Burning Bush is undoubtedly the highlight of this year’s programme. Starting with Jan Palach’s self-immolation in 1969, Holland, who studied film in Prague at the time, dramatically depicts the impact his sacrifice had on the social and political climate presenting a rich portrayal of the Czech experience at the beginning of Normalisation. The screenwriter Stepan Hulik and actress Tana Pauhofova will introduce and discuss the film, the Czech Republic’s entry for 2014 Film Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film..

Contemporary Czech and Slovak society and current issues are explored in a trio of documentaries. In Fragile Identity the Slovak director Zuzana Piussi, well known for the highly political documentaries for which she has faced imprisonment, examines her fellow countrymen’s current notions of nationality and raises concerns about its political misuse. On the other hand Vit Klusak and Filip Remunda, whose documentary style draws comparisons with Michael Moore, introduce in Free Smetana the bizarre case of the Czech bus driver jailed in 2012 for drawing antennae on politicians’ heads on pre-election posters. This brilliant example of investigative journalism exposing the Czech legal system will fuel the following discussion with journalists Edward Lucas (The Economist) and Ondrej Kundra (Czech weekly Respekt). Based on long-term observation and shot over a period of three years Adam Olha’s New Life of a Family Albumscreened as a part of the DocHouse series is an assured exploration of the life of a large family which falls apart after their father’s departure.

Partnering with the UK Jewish Film Festival the festival also presents the UK premiere of David Ondricek’s gripping crime thriller In the Shadow set in the politically sensitive 50’s while Janosik, the 1929 silent gem about the East European Robin Hood with live music accompaniment, will be part of the established Barbican Silent series.

MARTIN SCORSESE PRESENTS: WORLD CINEMA FOUNDATION: VOLUME ONE

Eureka! Entertainment to release , HD presentations of the restored versions of three neglected masterpieces of world cinema introduced by Martin Scorsese, as a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) box set as part of their award-winning The Masters of Cinema Series on 25 November 2013.

[For immediate release] Eureka! Entertainment have announced the release of MARTIN SCORSESE PRESENTS: WORLD CINEMA FOUNDATION: VOLUME ONE ( Three films preserved, restored, and re-presented by the efforts of the World Cinema Foundation: DRY SUMMER / TRANCES / REVENGE).   This is the first release from the official partnership between Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation and The Masters of Cinema Series, and will be released in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) box set edition on 25 November 2013.

Founded in 2007 and overseen by Martin Scorsese, the World Cinema Foundation (WCF) has spearheaded efforts to preserve, restore, and annually re-present neglected masterpieces of world cinema, particularly those from areas of the globe that have not traditionally been highlighted in prevailing evaluations of film, or which have lacked the financial, technical, or governmental infrastructure to ensure their preservation.

As the WCF's mission statement announces: "Cinema is an international language, an international art, but, above all, it is a source of enlightenment. There are wonderful, remarkable films, past and present, from Mexico, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Central Asia that deserve to be known and seen. Composed of filmmakers from every continent, the World Cinema Foundation breathes life into the idea that when a cultural patrimony is lost, no matter how small or supposedly 'marginal' the country might be, we are all poorer for it."

The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to act as the official partner of the World Cinema Foundation for the UK region. In this first in a regular series of Blu-ray box sets, we present the WCF's restorations of masterpieces from Turkey (Erksan's Dry Summer), Morocco (El Maanouni's Trances), and Kazakhstan (Shinarbaev's Revenge), with exclusive introductions by Martin Scorsese for each film in this set.

SYNOPSES

DRY SUMMER [ SUSUZ YAZ ] | A film by Metin Erksan | 1964 | Turkey | 75 minutes | 1.37:1 original aspect ratio

A brutal naturalist melodrama, Metin Erksan's masterful Dry Summer [Susuz yaz], which won the Golden Bear at the 1964 Berlin Film Festival, returns to the spotlight in a new restoration after decades of suppression by Turkish authorities: an arid fate for one of the most exciting films of the 1960s. Viscerally tactile, unsparing, and even on occasion outright lurid, Dry Summer has been described by filmmaker Fatih Akin as "one of the most important legacies of Turkish cinema."

During a particularly dry rural Turkish summer, a group of local workers enter into a dispute with a landowner when he decides the construction of new irrigation infrastructure must first and foremost service his own property. Wholly rapacious, the landowner foments a private war with his own kin after the brother takes a bewitching young wife. The battle between the factions plays out in stunning set-pieces: a pursuit with pistols amidst grass-stalks and dam-water before the setting sun evokes elements of Renoir (Toni), Ford (The World Moves On), Bergman (The Virgin Spring), and Shindô (Onibaba), while a scene set in a brush thicket wherein the landowner and his aggressors fight it out hatchet-and-club provides drama at least as exciting and gasp-inducing as the climax of Seven Samurai.

Dry Summer's sweat-dappled tone and baked images of promenade and labour recall Mexican-period Buñuel as much as aspects of mid-'50s Italian commercial melodrama and, via the film's backdrop of agrarian agitation and its low angles – which effect a figural relief against blazing, albeit greyish mid-contrast summer skies – post-montage Soviet agitprop. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the World Cinema Foundation's restoration of Metin Erksan's classic on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

TRANCES [ TRANSES ] | A film by Ahmed El Maanouni | 1981 | Morocco | 87 minutes | 1.85:1 original aspect ratio

The inaugural film of the World Cinema Foundation's efforts, Trances [Transes] is a picture unlike any other: a poetic, roving documentary-portrait performance-film based around the Moroccan band Nass El Ghiwane.

In this rare, transformational work, Nass El Ghiwane perform their music at concerts at once fervidly rally-like and suffused with the  spontaneity of a mass happening; recount their time working alongside the great chaâbi musician Boudjemaâ El Ankis in the 1970s; and generally philosophise and reflect upon life. As Martin Scorsese expressed at the time of the film's re-presentation in 2007: "I became passionate about this music that I heard and I saw also the way the film was made, the concert that was photographed and the effect of the music on the audience at the concert. I tracked down the music and eventually it became my inspiration for many of the designs and construction of my film The Last Temptation of Christ. [...] And I think the group was singing damnation: their people, their beliefs, their sufferings, and their prayers all came through their singing. And I think the film is beautifully made by Ahmed El Maanouni; it's been an obsession of mine since 1981."

True to its title, Trances is an hypnotic, exhilarating masterwork. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Ahmed El Maanouni's film, restored from the original 16mm camera and sound negatives, on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

REVENGE [ MEST' ] | A film by Ermek Shinarbaev | 1989 | Kazakhstan | 96 minutes | 1.37:1 original aspect ratio

Set largely in Korea and China, and spanning the 1910s to 1940s, Ermek Shinarbaev's epic masterpiece unites the resonant pictoriality of certain Far Eastern cinema with a mysticism rooted in the Russian tradition: a fitting and harmonic convergence for this collaboration (one of three) between the Kazakh director and Korean-Russian writer Anatoli Kim.

A rural schoolteacher, Jan, murders a pupil, the young daughter of a family under whom he had previously been a tenant. The father, Caj [pronounced "Tsaiya"], tracks him to China to exact revenge – but at at the moment of vengeance, Caj cannot act. He returns home only to take a concubine, who in turn bears him a son: Sungu, a prodigious composer of verse. At Caj's deathbed, the boy is informed he has been brought into the world purely for the sake of vengeance; he takes an oath to annihilate Jan.

Tonally, Revenge exhibits an extraordinary use of natural light that lends the figures an almost ethereal incandescence in the picture's first half; the second half of the film shifts into a no-less-impressive palate that is ally to late-Tarkovskyan naturalism. A narrative broken into seven chapters, and constructed in a full-circle that creates a visual and spoken summary of Sungu's poetic universe,Revenge is, to quote the critic Kent Jones, "a true odyssey, geographically and psychologically. One of the greatest films to emerge from the Kazakh New Wave, and also one of the toughest." The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Revenge, restored from the original camera negative with the involvement of Ermek Shinarbaev, on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

Extreme Summits and Kendal Mountain Festival Weekend

BFI Southbank marks the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest with a season dedicated to the daring of mountaineering, while the Kendal Mountain Festival comes to the Southbank

BFI Southbank will mark the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest with Extreme Summits, a season dedicated to the lure of the mountains and the heroic endeavours of those that scale their highest peaks. This season will span mountaineering exploits from the burgeoning European sport of Alpinism in the Victorian/Edwardian era through to modern day mountain top heroics, which not only push climbers to their limits, but also push the boundaries of what is possible with a camera in extreme environments. The centrepiece of the season will be Captain John Noel’s film record, The Epic of Everest(1924) which has been restored by the BFI National Archive.  The new restoration will also be released in cinemas nationwide on 18 October to coincide with its world premiere Archive Gala screening at the57th BFI London Film Festival.

The season will draw on further material from the BFI National Archive, including the first film ever taken in Tibet, the first ever recorded flight over Everest (Wings Over Everest, 1934) and footage fromClaude Friese-Greene’s 1925 film The Open Road. The season will feature footage of some of the most important British climbers from the second half of the 20th century, including Sir Chris Bonington,Joe Brown, Doug Scott, and Joe Tasker. Films documenting both successful and unsuccessful climbs including Kangchenjunga (1955), Everest Unmasked (1978) and The Summit (2012) will provide a look at how mountain film has developed over the years. Complementing the season BFI Southbank will also host a weekend of events from one of the world’s largest mountain festivals, with the Kendal Mountain Festival Weekend (Friday 22 Nov – Sunday 24 Nov); the festival will bring the best of adventure, discovery, environmental, wilderness heritage and culture to BFI Southbank.

The craze for Alpinism in the Victorian and Edwardian eras will be celebrated in Climb Every Mountain, a compilation of early mountaineering films from the BFI National Archive. This will include rare colour footage from Claude Friese-Greene’s The Open Road (1925), which recently became an internet sensation thanks to tweets from the likes of Kevin Spacey and Stephen Fry. The official film record of the third attempt to climb Everest, The Epic of Everest (1924), is one of the most remarkable films in the BFI National Archive. This legendary expedition culminated in the deaths of two of the finest climbers of their generation, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, and sparked an on-going debate over whether or not they did indeed reach the summit. Filming in brutally harsh conditions with a hand-cranked camera, Captain John Noel captured images of breath-taking beauty and considerable historical significance. Less well known, but extremely significant, is Noel’s first official record of the 1922 expedition to conquer the world’s highest peak Climbing Mount Everest; this was the first film taken in Tibet and recorded fascinating images of the culture and landscapes witnessed by the members of the expedition.Kamet Conquered (1931), filmed by mountaineer and cameraman Frank Smythe, is a straightforward portrait of a climb that achieved what it set out to do, without loss of life – success rather than tragedy. Smythe was disappointed by the reaction, feeling that audiences had a morbid appetite for disaster following the disastrous results of 1924. Everest in the 1930s will document further attempts on Everest throughout the 1930s and includes footage of legendary climbers Eric Shipton, Hugh Ruttledge and Raymond Greene.

In 1953 Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tenzing finally stood on the roof of the world, and Thomas Stobart’s film The Conquest of Everest (1953) shows the determination, heroism and teamwork that made this feat possible. Another first is the screening of Kangchenjunga (1955), a record of the first ascent of the world’s third highest mountain. This footage of their climb has never before been screened publicly. Sir Chris Bonington’s attempts to put a Briton on top of Everest for the first time are documented in This Week: Everest – The Fight for the Face (1972) and Everest the Hard Way (1975). Meanwhile Everest Unmasked (1978) and Everest: The Last Unclimbed Ridge (1983) explore the challenges of ‘Alpine style’ ascents without oxygen. The challenge and costs of climbing on ‘the mountaineer’s mountain’ are explored in K2 – The Elusive Summit (1985) and K2 – Triumph and Tragedy (1999), with the latter exploring the mountaineering history of the world’s second highest mountain. The Wildest Dream (2010) focuses on climbers Conrad Anker and Leo Houlding as they follow in the footsteps of Mallory and Irvine on Everest in a spectacular tribute to the 1924 expedition. Finally, The Summit (2012) shows how new myths and tragedies are created in the world’s highest mountains today.

Complementing the Extreme Summits season will be the Kendal Mountain Festival Weekend (Friday 22 Nov – Sunday 24 Nov). The mountain film is a truly exciting genre, but it’s more than just adrenaline and more than just mountains; one of the world’s leading mountain festivals, Kendal Mountain Festival, will bring the best of adventure, discovery, environmental, wilderness heritage and culture to BFI Southbank. Meet the Mountain Filmmakers will bring together three of today’s most vital practitioners of mountain film: Leo Dickinson, Paul Diffley and Alastair Lee. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible with a camera in extreme environments, each have produced outstanding adventure documentaries from sensational locations. This event will give audiences the opportunity to see some of their incredible work and then pose their questions afterwards. The rest of the weekend will comprise four exciting and varied films programmes: Mountaineering and Climbing (Sat 23 Nov), Ski, Board and Wild Water (Sat 23 Nov), Bike and Free Flight (Sun 24 Nov) and Environment, Culture and Exploration (Sun 24 Nov). From daring climbs on Himalayan giants and gut-wrenching BASE jumps to extreme ski adventures, these films explore what motivates a person to put his or her life on the line and the emotion generated by facing these truly amazing feats.

‘Stepping Up’ open for craft, technical and production crew

The second round of the training programme ‘Stepping Up’ is now open for applications from experienced craft, technical, production and post-production crew members to take the next step and move up in their career.

The aim of the scheme is to nurture Scotland’s existing creative talent, increase their employability and help them to ‘step-up’ to more senior roles through a combination of paid work placements, bespoke short courses and mentoring. Applications are particularly welcome from people looking to progress to become production managers,  first and second  assistant directors, production co-ordinators, script supervisors or standby art directors.

Alasdair Smith, Scotland Director, Creative Skillset, said: “The recent Employment Census  demonstrated growth in the Scottish creative media workforce, which now employs 12,500 people, up from 7,300 in 2009.  To ensure the industry continues to flourish it is vital we support film and TV crew through innovative schemes such as Stepping Up, which is already seeing great results from the first intake of applicants earlier this year.

“The need for structured opportunities for employees to make the next step was identified by local employers as a key skills challenge for Scotland. Stepping Up helps to give them a structured way to gain the rounded experience needed.”
The current round closes for applications at 9am on Wednesday 28 August. Further information can be found at www.creativeskillset.org/steppingup.

The scheme is funded by a partnership of Creative Skillset, BBC Scotland, Creative Scotland, BECTU, Skills Development Scotland and the European Social Fund, via Scotland’s Trade Union Centre (STUC). Financial support has also been received from a number of Scottish-based independent production companies.

Creative Skillset works closely with industry to identify and address skills needs and support production in Scotland and across the UK. Events also support the freelance community through free workshops, training and networking opportunities.

Craig Keller, producer of The Masters of Cinema Series, adds: “This new restoration of Nosferatu has been meticulously prepared and looks truly outstanding. It will allow a new generation to experience afresh one of the greatest of all cinematographic horrors, and a monument of German expressionism, looking better than ever. The film is uncanny, legitimately terrifying – to see it on the big screen in the midst of the Halloween season will make for an unforgettable experience.”

The Film4 FrightFest returns with five days of fearsome films

The Empire Cinema Leicester Square, London, UK, once again hosts the Film4 FrightFest this August Bank Holiday weekend. The home of horror, the festival has been running at this location since 2005 and has rapidly grown in popularity. With five days of screenings (22nd -26th August 2013), audiences can expect to be scared witless with a devilishly delightful line-up of premieres, previews and special screenings of fantasy and horror films. For visitors travelling from outside of the capital, a great selection of central London hotels can be found on LondonTown.com.

This year's festival opens with the world premiere of The Ford Brothers' latest offering, The Dead 2: India. The first international zombie film shot in India, it follows on from the Ford Brothers' critically acclaimed zombie road movie, The Dead. Set against the scenery of Rajasthan, the film offers a far bigger canvas with plenty of thrilling action, death-defying stunts and, of course, lots of fright. This is one of ten world premieres to be screened in London for the festival, with others including Banshee Chapter, produced by Star Trek's Zachary Quinto; Christoph Behl's Argentinean apocalyptic, The Decent; Kit Ryan'sDementamania; and retro Spanish chiller For Elisa.
The UK premiere of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado's revenge thriller, Big Bad Wolves closes the festival. Described as 'part OLDBOY, part Hitchcock and part Coen Brothers', the film is a black comedy thriller that sees a series of brutal murders put the lives of three men on a collision course. Back in 2010 Keshales and Papushado's Rabies was the most requested film on the FrightFrest line-up so Big Bad Wolves is sure a see the festival conclude with a bang.

With many films expected to sell out, this year the festival organisers have introduced FrightFest Extra. Securing additional screening slots at Empire 2, many of the bigger films will be given repeat screenings, thus creating more opportunities to enjoy the films. Festival goers can choose between three ticket types: festival passes, day passes or individual tickets for single films.

PAPADOPOULOS & SONS

Success is the joy you feel! Award-winning British Independent comedy PAPADOPOULOS & SONS comes to DVD

After a hugely successful self-distributed run in UK cinemas, Writer/Director Marcus Markou's debut feature PAPADOPOULOS & SONS is available on DVD through HMV andAmazon.co.uk from Monday 5th of August.

A “fresh, funny and poignant snapshot of ethnic life in London” (Stella Papamichael, Radio Times), writer/director Marcus Markou’s debut feature PAPADOPOULOS & SONSdances its way onto DVD through HMV and Amazon.co.uk from Monday, 5th of August.

After uptight, self-made millionaire Harry Papadopoulos (Stephen Dilane – Game of Thrones, The Hours) loses everything in the banking crisis, he is forced to team up with his estranged, free spirited brother Spiros (Georges Corraface) to rebuild his empire from the only part that remains – an abandoned Fish & Chip shop in a run-down part of London.

Also starring Georgia Groome (Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Ed Stoppard (Upstairs, Downstairs),PAPADOPOULOS & SONS comes to home video via distributor 101 Films, following a highly unusual – and hugely successful – self-distribution release across British cinemas.

British-born Greek Cypriot writer/director Markou decided to self-distribute the film in April, after traditional distributors rejected the film, claiming it could not find an audience. Markou disagreed, and decided to self-finance the release. It was a gamble, but it paid off – the film was a UK box office success and has since been sold to distributors in various territories around the world, including a highly successful run in Germany. PAPADOPOULOS & SONS will be released in the USA this October.

"This is a film about the spirit of family unity and survival," says Markou. "When I look back, its right that it got rejected and then went on to become a success. This is, after all, the story of Cyprus itself and of most Cypriots. We are plucky underdogs and we love to bounce back!"

Winner of the Michael Cacoyannis Audience Award from the 2012 Thessaloniki Film Festival, PAPADOPOULOS & SONS is “an ambitious attempt to rewrite Lear for laughter rather than tears. It's a throwback, but relaxed, sweet and funny with it: a first feature that makes an impression by not pushing too hard to make an impression” (MikeMcCahill, The Guardian)

PAPADOPOULOS & SONS is available on DVD through HMV and Amazon.co.uk from Monday, 5th of August 2013.
